Juliette Byrne is a multi-award-winning interior design studio renown for creating elegant, bespoke interiors across the UK and Europe. Over the last three decades, Juliette has built a vast portfolio of exclusive luxury projects ranging from Grade II listed properties and English country houses to modern riverside penthouses and boutique hotels. In our latest interview, we catch up with Juliette to discuss her latest London project.

Project overview / what was the project brief?

The project brief was to take on a listed grade ii property and turn it into a stunning contemporary family home. The client is involved in the creative industry and had many inspirational ideas that she wanted us to transform into practical solutions for each area.

A Spanish influence was to be curated and also allowing for entertaining, working from home and also a home for her three teenage children.

What Gabriel Scott items did you specify for this project & why?

We wanted to specify Gabriel Scott lighting as it represents a unique style which is timeless and complimented the traditional architectural features of the property adding a stylish twist to the ground floor reception room.

The room had originally been used solely as a formal dining room and we wanted to make it a multipurpose space. We removed the existing mahogany double doors and added in a bespoke fluted glass sliding door with metal detailing – this enabled us to add the new marble topped dining table at one end (designed by JB and commissioned from Justin Van Breda) and then a curved sofa from Seccolo for the TV area. We also added in tall joinery units on either side of the chimney breast.

To tie the two areas in the room together the Gabriel Scott Luna chandelier was the perfect choice as the long tubular design hung at two different levels gave the visual impact we were looking for.

Did you customize these pieces to work with the project? If so, how?

We decided to use the standard colours that Gabriel Scott team recommended.

What do you look for in furniture when specifying for a project?

We always try and blend the furniture to fit within the architecture and client requirements. Quality and style are super important but we work within the client’s budget and brief so use a variety of manufacturers and suppliers. Gabriel Scott's Bardot Barstools were selected for this project for the kitchen area.

How do you use lighting to elevate the spaces you design?

We always try to look and design the lighting early on in our creative process.

The lighting can make or break a scheme. The architectural lighting needs to be functional and we like to keep it as discreet as we can – soft led lighting in built in joinery and coffered ceilings as well as plastered in downlights are our favourites.

This allowing us to add in sensational decorative light fixtures such as the Gabriel Scott Luna pendant and these decorative lights add the focal point to each area.

What was your favourite part of designing this project?

We enjoyed the challenge of incorporating the clients’ ideas with ours and working with them on various bespoke items – a totally white Corian top floor study chill out area.

Sourcing a variety of wonderful commissioned art pieces – from sculpture to artworks.

To personalise each space for the children and adapting the traditional house to 21st century state of the art way of life.
